A
typical Smithsonian Scholars in the Schools program brings one or more
Smithsonian scholars to a host school or school system for three days.
These experts are specifically selected for their ability to convey
their knowledge and enthusiasm for learning to the grade levels requested
and to serve as role models for young people who have yet to imagine
careers in these fields. The scholar gives three talks per a day, in
some combination of large assemblies, small classroom visits and teacher
in-service workshops. View a sample schedule.
The outreach program
staff of The Smithsonian Associates designs and implements Scholars
in the Schools. Advance planning begins with a site visit by a program
coordinator to meet with local educators to determine the needs and
interests of the school community. These on-site visits allow us to
plan programs that support the curriculum and ensure smooth logistical
operations. In addition to the three-day program, students receive a
reading list and instructions for accessing further information on the
Smithsonian’s website.
